1/72 Swiss Confederate

Intended for the League of Cambrai 1508 – 1516, so both sets used are on the early side – but never mind.

Another one of those projects I’ve been pondering on for some time, being unsure about my ability to replace the jointed plastic pikes which come with the MiniArt set with brass rod.  This turned out to be not as difficult as I expected; tedious, yes.
The problem with this scale is the general lack of figures and command figures in particular; so I supplemented with Tumbling Dice 1/72 metals.  These turned out not to be that helpful but managed to use some here and for another project. Tried Dixon figures in the mistaken belief that they were small 28’s; they aren’t, so will use them as command elements more for decoration than anything else.

If I wasn’t as lazy, I would do another five companies; Schwyz, Fribourg, Solothurn, Schaffhausen and Appenzell to complete the thirteen Cantons of the Confederacy. But I am, so I won’t Smile
So I'll settle for support troops rather than more pikes.

  1. They came out nice. I have the miniart set but they languish in their box. I am leery of redbox, but can't tell the difference in your pictures, may require another look.

  2. A very nice project! On Paul's blog you can find a Burgundian army, if you need more inspiration: http://paulsbods.blogspot.de/2011/10/burgundian-army-foot.html

  4. Many thanks for your kind comments folks. The ultimate plan is to do another four companies to get a 128-figure pike block. I won't be holding my breath.

  7. Very nice work on these. As you've seen from my blog, I'm in the process of painting up 256 Swiss pikemen in 15mm!

  8. Tamsin, cheers for the comment. Indeed, best of luck and make sure you post a finished pic! 128 is the best I can manage and I never want to see them again :)

  10. Well Paul it's certainly visually better but I'll need to see the performance difference in a game between it and the three smaller groups. When that'll happen is in the lap of the gods.
